Willis Carrier invented modern air conditioning in July 1902. Over the next 50 years, his input into bettering the efficiency of industrial production and improving personal comfort was so significant that it has earned him the nickname “The Father of Air Conditioning”. In 1915, Willis and six other engineers from the Buffalo Forge Company – a company that manufactured blacksmith’s forges, drilling machines, steam engines, and pumps – pooled $32,600 to create the Carrier Engineering Corporation. The company manufactured and distributed HVAC systems, commercial refrigeration, and commercial food service equipment. Carrier began marketing residential air conditioners in the 1950s, leading to increased population in some of the hotter areas of the country.
Carrier merged with Affiliated Gas Equipment, Inc., which owned the Bryant Heater Co., Day & Night Water Heater Co., and Payne Furnace & Supply Co., in 1955. Then, in July 1979, United Technology Corporation purchased the Carrier Air Conditioning Company, which then became known as Carrier Corporation.
Carrier has made many significant contributions to the heating, ventilation, and air conditioning industry as well as society. The pioneering company hired America’s first woman air conditioning engineer, Margaret Ingels, in 1917, during the time lawmakers were considering granting woman the right to vote. New York sports fans were able to enjoy professional hockey games after Madison Square Garden, opened in 1925, thanks to the Carrier centrifugal chillers keeping the ice and the fans cool.
Carrier has led the way in making the HVAC industry more environmentally friendly. For example, their commitment to adopting a safer refrigerant was carried out before regulations mandated the usage of new, safe refrigerants by all HVAC manufacturers. In 2011, Carrier introduced a new technology, Greenspeed™ intelligence, that is featured in their Infinity® heat pump, resulting in the greatest heating efficiency of any air source heat pump.
